So far my job has been really good. Yesterday, I was taught to do a park inspection and grounds maintenance. My first stop of the day was at AB Green park on Dale Ave. and Laclede Station Rd. There was some kind of family party or something going on there on the weekend, and some parts of the grounds under the big pavilion were slightly covered in silly string. Probably a birthday party. But, the main job of park inspection is to make sure that there is no liter in the park, the restrooms are clean, and check to see that your irrigation systems are in working order. Mostly, everything was in good order, and I was impressed at how the restrooms were generally clean. There was one thing about the women's restroom that was a bother. One of the commodes had a broken battery, and the toilet was full of toilet paper and urine, which made it damn near impossible to walk in and clean it. Hopefully, they can get someone out there to fix it. It happened again today when I inspected it, but it wasn't as bad as yesterday, though. After I did that, there was a backstop that had to be taken down so my other co-workers and I did the deed of taking it down and putting it away, thus setting the place up for future soccer goals. When we left AB Green, Dan (the guy who's training me at the moment) and me left for the Public Safety and City Hall site (we call it the 911 building) for grounds maintenance. All we had to do was weed out the flowering that was around the building. That was tense ti some degree, considering you have those vine weeds that grow around some places. Those things are hell to get out. So I did that for the remainder of the day.
Today, I got some more hands-on training. After another Park Inspection at AB Green, I had to help Dan fix a windscreen that got torn down by wind damage. When we left there, we had to do some more grounds maintenance on McCutcheon Rd. This was a part of Richmond Heights I haven't ventured into yet, mostly because it's more of a "rich-white-folk" type neighborhood (and God knows I'd probably get into trouble venturing into that type of neighborhood). Weed killer alone wasn't going to be enough for the tall growing stuff, so we went back to the PW (public works) building to get the string trimmer (the technical term for "weed whacker") to take them all down. Once that was done, and after lunch break, I got to drive a John Deere Gator to go around Big Bend Rd. to water the plants around there. It's a bit of a challenge to get to some of these plants because you have to maneuver the Gator in and out of the street and avoid traffic. My other complaint was that the hose used to water the plant was leaking all throughout the trip, causing me to get wet in the process (but the problem was corrected when we got back to the PW building). Other than that, it was pretty fun. I liked it. I might be getting used to it since I did a really good job on them that they may make this like one of my main jobs, even though they want to crosstrain me on other things as well. We'll see how that goes, but I wouldn't mind doing that almost everyday, though. Driving that Gator was pretty fun!
Oh, and here are a couple of things I found out today, too. Remember the studio apartment on Yale and Mitchell that I wanted to get into last year? Well, not too long ago, a little girl was abducted from one of the apartments in that place, and hasn't been seen sense! WHAT THE HELL?! How the hell does that happen? Well, needless to say I won't be looking at that place again. It's just not safe anymore. But here's another thing I just found out. Richmond Heights buys out places around the city from those that can't sell them and rents them to employees for reasonably cheap prices! Oh, I'm definitely looking into that one! I'm going to save some money up first, but that's going to be the first thing I look into when I'm ready! That made my day!
